hi all,  I finally got my wheel horse rj's inside, 2 of them froze  and the rear ends locked up, now that they are inside I can see oil leaking from the axel shafts , there must have been some water in the rear end. does anyone know the size of seal required ? do I just pull the tire and hub off or does it require a tear down, and if so is there somewhere to source parts and any other gaskets / seals that may be required or am I looking to fudge this the best I can,  thanks john

Well, I just went through this for a customer, so here is what I did for him.

Up until just recently I could get these seals from Toro.  The Wheelhorse number was 1257, the Toro number was 83-2830.  They are now NLA.  This just happened recently.  I bought seals last summer from Toro.

I ended up selling a Rawhide 9835 seal that I happened to have a pair of.  That seemed to work well since I have not heard a squeak out of my customer since.  You can get that at a good industrial supply store.

Bolens 1000 of Bolens Parts and Supplies might have them or (if not) can surely get them.

You can pull the wheel and hub and just replace the end seal's but my guess is that the oil is getting past the bearing's which are probably worn inside the trans you can check with our guys for the seals they can get them for you I think the Toro part no. is 83-2840 you may be able to get them from motion industries 3900 south cicero ave Chicago IL

If it is the 1257 seal you need it has been replaced by Toro 83-2840 and still available from them.

This axle is supported by bushings rather than bearings and the seal is installed over the axle tube instead of in it. Have never heard of anyone finding an alternative seal that would stay on the tube.

If no one else has any I am a National/Timken Dealer and can still get the seal for you.

Interchange shows for a 3/4'' shaft, sound correct?

Axles are 1" diameter.

The outside of the seal needs to be sized to drive over the axle tube. Most seals have a radiused or rolled inner edge on the OD so they start into a bore easily and that is what the problem is. The seal Toro supplies is a straight sided cup. Hard to put into words.

I think someone's got their part numbers mixed up

The 83-2830 looks like this

There is also another seal that supposedly is for a part # 1257 that looks like this, and has a new part# of 83-2840

I believe you are looking for the thicker seals in the last pic, I think Ben just got the part number jumbled up in his first post but I'll wait for him to confirm.

Seal is still available with the 1'' ID X 1.4410 Total Width by .25 Thickness , The only difference is going to be thickness as I believe the original seal was thicker.

Send me a PM if interested.

I have the 83-2830 replacing the original 1234 seal used at the input shaft of the trans. That is a 3/4" shaft.

thanks all, I have a spare rear end and will take it apart and rebuild it, then start changing out the rears on the other horses as time allows, no big rush as I don't use them, I just wash and wax and paint and dust. what a crazy hobby, buy new tires for $150 with no intention of ever putting the tractor in the dirt
