I just picked up a new to me JD 265. It will only run with the choke closed and even then not all of the time. Sometimes it will crank and crank. Turn the key off and on and it will usually fire right up (choke still on).

While taking the carb apart for a dip I noticed that the fuel shutoff solenoid plunger does not retract with 12 volts applied. The plunger will stay down if I push it down and release on its own when the voltage is removed.

Is this proper operation or is my solenoid in need of replacement?

Ray

A little youtube research after making this post has shown that my solenoid has failed.

Apparently a common fix is to cut the plunger off and use a fuel shutoff valve installed in the fuel line.

Glad you got it figured out. We have a 265 here that is in need of an engine.

What gives up on the engine?

I have a JD F525 with a Kawasaki engine. This machine just wont quit. The problem is that it is not the best on inclines.

The 265 that I picked up is to replace a Honda 4518 that I am anxious to see go. I wont be able to get rid of it fast enough.

His wife doesn't check oil! Has a serious knock. And that is a JD engine only, so cannot figure out what other parts may work in it. Haven't a clue on these engines about what is what!
