I have an old 48" for my MF 12 which has a grease nipple on the gearbox, and have always just used basic lithium from my grease-gun.

The owners manual calls for SAE 90 EP.

Years ago when I had a MF7Hydra it had 2 gear boxes on the deck, one day I took the covers off and they were almost dry, what was in there looked like grease. So I put some grease in them and found that the tractor didn't have very much grass cutting power. So I took the grease out and put some gear oil in and it had more power, cut grass faster. So I decided to take the gear oil out and put some engine oil in there and again got even more power for cutting grass, but it leaked out all over the place. I ended up using gear oil, I'd say the thinner the better.
