I got the wife a HP laptop computer with Win 8.1 for Christmas and can't figure out how to get rid of the login at start-up on the laptop. We used to be able to set them up as a single user on XP and even Win7 and not have to use a security code to open the laptop. I want to get rid of this for her, can anyone help?

I sure hope someone knows the answer to Brian's question. I'd like to nix the log-in on my wife's laptop also.

I'm not sure there is a way unless you change it over to local login and loose some of the sync benefits. The wife and I both use the laptop we have with Windows 8.1 and we each have our own login so I don't think I can set it up to not have a login. I know I was able to set it to not have to log in each time it goes to sleep though.

How does one do that?

Ok to change whether you need a password or not after the pc goes to sleep. There are a couple ways to get there but basically you need to get into the 8.1 pc settings. The quickest way I know to get there if you have a touchscreen is to slide in from right to left on the right edge of the screen and click on the gear icon and then click on "pc settings". I think if you don't have a touch screen you can move the mouse into the bottom right corner and than move it left and the slide out should show.
The other way is to get to the control panel and click on user accounts. Once that window is open there is a link that says "Make changes to my account in PC Settings"
Once you are on the pc settings page click on accounts than on the left side click on sign in options. The option at the bottom called "Password Policy" click change and agree to the pop up and you should be good.

Thanks George I was woundering how to do that. I have had this thing with 8.1 for awhile and I will say it is the worst OS for a laptop works good on a tablet.

I have 8.1 on my laptop. I do not have to sign in at all. I don't
know how it got set that way, and I'm afraid to go and look.
I hate this OS compared to Win 7. All those stupid slide outs that
show up if you're .00005 of a mm off the mark are really very annoying.
Does anyone even use them?
Also, does anyone have problems with the cursor just randomly moving
while you're typing, usually when you hit the space bar, and before you
know it, your paragraph reads like it was done by a crack head?

The wife decided she wanted to go back to a desktop, so I got her one w/ 7 for Christmas and a 22" monitor. So I inherited her laptop w/ 7 and bequeathed my laptop w/ 8.1 to our 14 yr old granddaughter. I'm sure it will be more user friendly for her because me and 8 and later 8.1 just couldn't develop a good working relationship, LOL!!
