My Mom is down visiting from IN this week and her laptop is having some issues, so I started digging around in it and can't figure out how to fix a couple things.

1. She has to right click open any program instead of double left clicking?

2. I can't see the Defragment screen when I do a Defragmentation, it just shows the wheel going round and round. I used to be able to watch the drive and see a screen shot of how it was going.

Thanks for your help.

With the right click and open sounds like it might be the double click speed. Go in to the control panel and under mouse you can adjust the double click speed of the mouse.

With the defrag thing I am not sure as I never use it. Did she switch her display resolution to where not as much fits on the screen?

She hasn't switched anything, but thought she got a bug maybe at the hotel on the way down. I wanted to do a De-Frag but all I can find is a small window that offers De-Frag, not open the big screen up with the drives showing and also the progress.

i agree with George on the mouse.  There should be an adjustment in the control panel.  Is she using an external mouse or a touch pad mouse?

On the Defrag I'm not sure either.  Have you tried to click on the maximize button to make sure it open all the way?

Actually with Vista, defragmenting is not needed as it's done automatically in the background while the system is idle.

In Windows Vista, there are many improvements in the defrag engine and in the manageability of fragmentation. By default, Windows Vista uses Task Scheduler to automatically keep the hard disk defragmented. This automated defragmentation does not affect the performance of the Windows Vista operating system. The performance is not affected because hard disk defragmentation only occurs when the computer is idle. The task that runs the defrag engine runs as a low-priority task. Therefore, defragmentation does not affect the performance of other tasks that the user performs on the computer.

Yes OB, I saw that it runs once a week, but I figured I could watch it just like on XP. I can find it on my Win7 either.

Bill, she is using an external mouse. I will check those settings.

Might consider running CCleaner on it while in your possession.

Bill, she is using an external mouse. I will check those settings.

You may also want to try another mouse and see how it works.  The left button may not be working very well.
