Good Looking D4-10 you have there with a nice front blade and mower deck. It appears that the front hood support has been leaned forward and then someone added a piece of stainless to the back of the hood to make it reach. Not sure why that was done??

I'll check out the hood and see what I can figure out, the guy I got it from just had it cause he liked it. It had been in his shed for a few years so he didn't know why any of the changes were done.

He seemed like a nice man when I spoke with him. It looks like the plow was repainted too?

Hardly anything stays in the same shape it leaves the factory . After a couple or so decades deteriorations and modifications just happen . If you get lucky wind will blow away chaff and dirt .

The plow doesn't seem to be repainted but could have been at some point a while ago.

I need to get the carb adjusted properly. Other than that just took it for a ride around my yard.

congrats!  nice one.  from the d-4-10 designation (opposed to the later d4-10) on the hood and the knobs that's an early one.  is the serial number plate on it?

Congrats on the Bush Hog D4-10. You also have the muffler shield which seems to go missing on a lot of them.
