I'm getting ready to do the first oil change in the Massey so I looked through the book to see what I need. To my surprise, they called for either straight 30 weight or 10W30 for all weather. I thought all diesels took 15W40. Anyone else using 10W30 in their Diesel engine?

Yeah I started using the diesel 10-30 for a couple years now. I use it summer and winter. When I first started using it I only used the 10-30 in the winter and the 15-40 in the summer. Because I started to buy it by bulk [cheaper this way] its easier to just buy the 10-30 rather then a bit of each..

Diesel 10-30? Not regular 10-30? I guess I never bought anything other than 15-40 so I wasn't aware there is a difference.

Same here.  That's my diesel oil.

We run 10-30 in colder weather. That's about 300 diesel engines, I think.

X2 on manufacturers recommendation.  Our 900 fleet trucks run 15 40  year round however our reefers run some other oil I can't remember off hand but its not 15 40.

Rotella is darn good D oil and think it does come in straight 30 too.  It is also for Heavy Duty protection for gas engines. I use it alot in my stuff, not even diesel.  Lots of CASE guys use this oil in their rear axles with good luck.

Thanks for the advice.  I guess I can use just about anything.  The book calls for either straight 30 or 10W30 for any temperature range.  It says I can use 15W40 as an alternative if the temperature is 14 degrees F or higher.  I think I will see what I can find in Rotella because that's what I've always used in my other diesel and, you're right, it is good oil.  The book seems to like the lighter oil so maybe these newer diesel engines prefer it.  Might make for easier cold starts too.

We use 30W in our two diesel farm tractors but they are considerably older, I too use Shell Rotella in almost everything.

I picked up some Rotella 10W30 blend for diesel engines last night.  once I use the tractor again to where it's warm, I'll go ahead and do the 100 hour oil change.  Should be good for when the weather gets colder.  I figure I can't go wrong if it's what the book calls for.  I looked thru the book for my other diesel (1977 Satoh) and found that the oil we've been using since it was new isn't called for in the book.  For that one I'm afraid to use anything else for fear of messing it up!

I put Rotella 15-40 in my Ford as soon as I got it. I figured if so many over the road diesels were running it  as far back as I can remember it must be good.  I have since  put it in my GT  and both my pickup and car. See no reason to keep more than one oil on hand.

I run Rotella 15w-40 in everything (gas&diesel) except my vehicles. Old engines run better with it and the extra zinc is good for them. When I my 3/4ton truck hits 200k miles I'm going to switch to the diesel oil.
