Hello, my name is Andrew from the UK and I got two Bolens, a 800 with a mower deck and a 1254 which is a project. I also got a Haban Sickle Mo, a Howard Bolens rear cylinder mower attachment and a snow plough as well. I am thinking of maybe buying a Lawn Keeper and would love to get my hands on a Ride a Matic as well. I am looking forward to reading more about Bolens on this forum. Cheers Andrew

Welcome to the Forum!

Nice looking machines you got there!

Please tell us more about that mower!

I see its the Howard Rotovator brand, is this a flail mower? The design is nothing like I've seen on the Us Bolens Badged products.

Here are a couple more photos of the rear mounted cylinder mower. It was made in Essex, England on behalf of Howard Bolens. It's a hefty bit of kit too. I can get some more details tomorrow.

Very neat attachment!

Here we call it a ''Reel Mower"

The ones offered here in the US were Bolens built and smaller in size

I took these photos when the mower was delivered to me. I have since cleaned it up and greased it where needed.

Hi Andrew, welcome to the forum. Nice collection of tractors and attachments!

I know those Morris Minors are small, but I think you're going to have to get a tad wider snow plow for it. ;-)

Cheers!

Welcome, glad to see some over seas stuff,The rear mower is very cool,I take it that there's a driveshaft like on the rear tiller to run it,make sure you get us some pics when you get it mounted,I would say you did real well,I'm guessing the Haban sickle mower hasn't been used much

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. The rear mower is shaft driven. The haban I recently got came from a chap up in Yorkshire who kept it in storage for some 20 years. He used it several times and then moved house and kept it under cover since. A lucky find I think!. I use my Morris Minor van as part of my gardening business and I did own a Morris pick up until recently but upgraded it to a Toyota HIlux.

Nice tractors and attachments Andrew. You came to the right place to learn about Bolens. There are lots of experts here and lots of info in the forum on the various models.

Welcome to GTT, Andrew!

That Howard mower is very interesting to me.  .....All of the PTO-powered reel mowers for the Bolens tractors sold in the USA were front-mounted.  ....Gang reel units, which were not powered by the tractor, were towed behind the tractor, or mid-mounted.

Was that Howard mower designed for use on fine lawns, or was it better suited for rough areas?

Is the cutting width wider than the tractor tires' tread?  .....I would think the tires would flatten the grass before it was cut by the mower.

Thank you for the pics and any further information on this unusual (to us Bolens fans) mower!

The rear cylinder mower is for fine amenity turf such as cricket fields. It's slightly wider than the 1254. As a professional gardener I am perplexed by the design of it as the wheels would flatten the grass before cutting. It was made by Horwool MFG Ltd in Essex, England. Apparently there would be a fibre glass grass collector at the rear.it's my intention to mount it on the 1254 at some point. I got it from a chap in North Wales who told me he got it as part of a job lot. Once it's mounted I will take some photos of it in situ; probably something to do over the Festive Period.

One thing I have learnt that Bolens implements are difficult to source in the UK and when one is up for grabs you have to move quickly to get it. A lesson learnt was a Bolens rotavator on eBay that I missed out on.
