I have a ??? about my regulator on my LP tank... I went hunting deer last week at our camp, I turned the furnace on and proceeded to un-pack the truck.. On the  500 gal. tank, the reg. made a kinda a funny noise,, like  a loud purrrring...  I tapped the reg. and it quit..  My curiosity got the best of me and I unscrewed the black plastic cap on the  reg.  That's where I think the noise is coming from..  I wanted to put a drop of oil on the rod and spring in there, but it was cold and thought ,maybe not a good idea..  Should I call a heating contractor and have the Reg replaced or is it something simple.???

If it's working fine I'd leave it alone. Once in a great while the reg on my barbque wants to sing and it's still working fine.

Yes, ice can cause that.  Pretty normal in most instances.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as things are working the same as usual. I agree it was frozen .

the one recommendation I have is not to use oil !!!!  not sure about lp regulators but I do know on most high pressure regulators if you use oil it will blow up in your face!!!  Otherwise I have heard regulators humming and working fine so I agree with all the others.

the thing about "no oil" is largely with welding gauges as the oil itself wont automatically make it "blow up" but "IF" there is a spark nearby especially with O2, it will aggravate things in a hurry!

Yes sounds normal to me also, but PLEASE use no oil on anything, I fill oxygen high pressure and liquid cylinders everyday and it could get ugly in a hurry if oil is used.
