Large Frame Lock Ring Coupling

Ok guys, what the heck is the "secret" to getting the lock PTO coupling OFF the PTO shaft?

 

I have two of those rascals that I can not get to release.

 

I've tried as many ways as I can and nothing has worked.

 

Do I need to sacrifice a goat to the PTO gods?

They are spring loaded in the lock position, favoring the side, top,  bottom etc, which is off center .The tendency is to push ,pull or over shoot the center position while trying to get it loose, little bit of movement so the lock collar ring centers on the hub then slide it foward or back to remove. They can be a PIA.

To get implement off? or to get the outer ring off the quick-disconnect?  Should be a snap ring on rear, that also is spring stop to release, spring comes back and ring, balls fall out. then all of the stuff slides off the front of it.

 

If on an implement still, try lots of PB Blaster, working it back and forth and try to push the main part forward ON to the shaft as you pull the ring BACK from the shaft like it is supposed to work. Any chance the splines are so worn, that it is partway twisted over to the next one?  Might be able to remove that snap ring right there on tractor and try pull-back, just watch for the balls and hardware to be falling all over.

Just as wrenchiton states. Don't try to move it too far. Mine work great but you need to find that middle point when releasing them.

Those snap ring couplers are a real pain you know where.  All the larger equipment PTO drive has then now.  Work and look good on the dealer floor but get them to work in the dirt, etc. and sooner or later they quit working   Especially if/when they get a shot of oil or something and that gathers dirt and it make gooooo.  Then nothing works.  Best solution if have found is get rid of all the jnk except the steel balls.  Slide you coupler on the PTO and line it up where it is supposed to be.  Drop the balls in and slide a hose clamp over them and tighten it down.  Stay put till you want it off.  Loosen the hose clam, slide it off and catch the 3 balls.

 

Just my solution to the problem.  Have used it for years and just have to keep a supply of those steel balls around.

OK....time to "Fess up".

 

All that time I was doing it wrong.

 

For who knows what reason, I was thinking that to release it that the collar needed to be "tilted" :wallbanging:

 

Was trying to get the stub off the HT20D so I could mount the Flail-Mo, and 'accidently' pushed it SIDEWAYS.

 

Had another one of those "Dang I feel Stoopid" moments when it released.
