What's Up With The Wiring Schemes For A 1254?

Hello everyone.

 

Today's puzzler is brought to you by MyBolens1053. Here are the details to the puzzle.

 

1053 is being fitted with a replacement TRA-12D that has a Solid State Ignition that came out of a 1254.

 

The tubeframe manual shows a 5 pin switch that needs to be wired a certain way. (See pic below)

When I go to the Parts list it shows a different wiring all together which seems to match the wiring that was in the 1254 including the voltage regulator and coil. (See pic below)

The switch in the 1254 is a 3 pin with Batt, Ign. & St.

 

Did Bolens pull a goof in the tubeframe manual? Or did they wire these up depending on what switch they installed?

 

Ideas?

The TRa-12 solid state ignition requires a magneto type of ignition switch. When the switch is off, the M terminal of the switch is grounded and ties the white wire of the solid state ignition to ground to kill spark.The TRA 12 with breaker points is wired completely different and uses the 3 (or 5) terminal switch. The difference is also in how the ignition coil is wired. With points, the minus side of the coil is hooked to the breaker points and the + side is tied to the ignition terminal that has 12 volts when the switch is on. With the solid state, the minus side of the coil is tied to ground and the + side is hooked to the ss module. Take a look at the diagram I attached and see if it explains it.ignition_service2.png

Thanks Bud W, I guess I'll need to open the shroud and look to what I have in there. If it is the single SS unit then that will explain the self power from the SSI for spark and lights as that part of the system is isolated from the field (F) windings (charging) of the generator. Now it's starting to make sense.

Okay, here's the switch off of the 1254 and since the key is missing (non-standard tractor key) I had to remove the tumbler to get to the rotor inside to turn it. That way, I can check the terminal connections according to the key positions.

When I set the switch to the Run position the Batt and Ign are closed in the switch. When I turn to the start position all 3 are closed together.

 

Again, this is the switch that was on the 1254 with the TRA-12D SS motor.

 

Yes. I am befuddled.

That switch has been added in, not one that came from the factory its an entirely different brand.....

Yes. I am befuddled.

This switch is what is used in the 1253 according to the diagram I have.  I had to replace mine from a jerry rigged set up with push button start.  A NAPA 7-01854   5 terminal switch will work as long as your not using the original plug, which I am not.

I haven't had a chance to open the motor shroud to see what in there but, seeing how the coil is wired on it I am guessing I have a 1st generation SS ignition system.

I also don't see any bolts/nuts on the tin that could be a mount of the ignition module, an ignition module itself or any signs that a second external part is involved. Just a black wire running from the coil's + terminal and disappears heading forward along the engine.
