Takes somewhat of a learning curve, jumping to 8 from XP.

Trying to get the updates installed. Have to leave the computer on and idling for it to download them. Only 106 out of 124 to go! Then maybe I can get the 8.1 upgrade!

Back on the laptop for now. Figured out how to get all the updates downloaded and installed. Now it's downloading Win 8.1! DSL is slow this morning!

I've heard 8.1 is a lot better then 8.  If you keep in mind the M$ tried to make a desktop OS into a mutli device OS (Think Android, IOS) it may help you to understand the concept.  Good luck.

Thanks, Bill! It is finalizing the installation right now. I may still try one of your other operating systems on this machine. Got lots of room for it!

I'm muddling my way through! Took a while to find Windows Explorer. It's now File Explorer.

I picked a 1TB external hard drive today. Have the system backed up. Now to set things up with the programs I like and backup again! I lost some stuff when the other one died. Most of the pics are on here, but a few other things I can't replace. Oh well, gonna make sure it doesn't happen again!

I have 7 on a laptop and desktop.  The desktop would run 8.1 but might consider a move to 10 and skip 8.1.
