Is it worth replacing the brushes pre-emptively?

I can get a brush kit for $26 and a new starter is $96 from Sears. It doesn't have the smoothest starts, in my opinion, so perhaps the starter is 'starting' to go..?

Does it growl when starting? If so, the brushes and the bushings may need replacing.

I had one growl(rabbid I think)it committed suicide by throwing its bindix into a moving flywheel at half throttle..what a mess it was..I miss that starter..

Hmm.. I wouldn't describe mine as a growl. It's more of the classic sound a car makes when it needs a couple seconds to start up. Like it's slowly starting to turn then fires up.

I'd say it needs 1-2 seconds to start up

The starter quit on my home built high loader, I pulled it off to find every tooth on the gear was GONE! I bought a whole new starter and now the old loader starts better then it ever has! :rocker2:
