I got a free 2146 and the engine surges a bit and as it warmed up it got a bit of a backfire. This is why the previous owner got rid of it. It only has 286 hours on it. Cranked it this morning for the first time in seven years. Does anyone have experience with the Lindamere 349 engine? Where should it start looking?

Maybe I should clarify it is a Linamar 14 hp. Formally Onan.

I know nothing about a Linamar.  Heard good things about them, but never have I seen one.

Is the backfire only at high RPM or low RPM or both?  Does it go away if you choke it?

The governor was floating up and down as soon as it started. It smoothes out when rpms are increased. After it warmed up a bit you could here it to begin to backfire lightly I think maybe through the carb. I have read that some had anti backfire devices installed but this one does not. I think I clean the carb.

Adding choke does not help.

I would imagine choking made it worse, try spaing soapy water just around the carb gasket and intake manifold gasket looking for bubbles while engine is idling, if one is suspected then cover it with a layer of grease and see if it changes.

Water in gas could also cause backfiring, drain old gas and refill with good high octane gas.

I had thought about adding octane. Also thought about maybe the fuel pump is weak and fuel supply is not steady. I will try the soapy water. Good news is that it does run.

Not sure about these newer 'Onan's', but one of mine had a little backfire going on. Adjustments did nothing. Pulled the breather and was watching it start and saw gas coming back up the carb. Come to find out, the exhaust valves were out of adjustment (too loose) and not letting the gasses out, so they came back up. Starts and runs great now.

OK, I can add to that my list of things to check out.  Next time I start it I will try to take a video of it running and get that posted.  That might help get the problem solved.  If others have ideas, I am all ears.  Thanks!

Does anyone have a service manual for a Linamar Zx390 14 hp engine that goes in a Cub Cadet 2146? Specifications? Thanks!

I set the valves to the correct clearance cranked it up and no difference. Still loping and backfire through the carburetor. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
