Whats a good substitute for type a trans fluid in my 69 hydro trac?

Type A fluids  are a very old type of ATF. This is a good link to look at.

When I had my '76 Roper 16T (same tractor, just a newer version  Roper made your machine for Sears) I got the owners manual with it and it said "use Ford Type F" transmission fluid, with no substitutions. 

but yeah, today's "Dexron VI" is  what your Type A would be these days.  Each "rendition" of Dexron is backwards compatible with the past versions. and Dexron was what replaced "Type A" sometime in the 70s.
