We made our last cutting of alfalfa hay last week. This was the last time to make hay off of this field, as we planted a new alfalfa field. Soon, the field will be sprayed to kill the alfalfa off, then (hopefully) this Fall, the field will be chisel plowed, so that it will be ready to go back into row crop production next year. Here are some pictures.
In some of the pictures, you can see the stage that our soybeans are at in their turning. Some are a bit farther along than these. Harvest is getting closer!
We did the last cutting at my Grandpa's farm last week.Dad mowed 2 wednesdays ago.Last he checked it said scattered showers.Well it's ben like that for the last month and we didn't get any.He got home thurs night and it changed to it's going to rain.wll it did.We finally got it baled a week later. It's been tough finding good drying weather this year.We started combining corn last tues in the fields we put winter barley in.

Since chisel plowing is faster than mold board plowing, you can cover more ground and don't use as much fuel, so that makes it cheaper. It doesn't cost that much (or take that much time) to spray roughly 6 acres. And, since we do our own spraying, that helps save cost, too (not having to pay for someone else doing it).
And, mold board plows can create a "hard pan", though you don't want to chisel plow to wet, as you will somewhat cause the same problem, though not quite as extensive.
