Hello -

I recently posted in the Ford section about the old Ford 120 I just got a couple days ago, along with several other pieces of equipment. You can see that thread here: http://gardentractor...n-old-ford-100/

Anyhow, as part of that haul, I also got a John Deere 116.

As you can see, it's a bit rough. But I figure I can get it running again. I'll probably get it in reasonable working order and then sell it.

Any comments, suggestions, observations, etc., are welcome.

Thanks!

Perhaps you have either the wrong hood or the wrong engine.  I have a 116 in the storage shed and it has the Briggs and Stratton vertical flat head opposed engine in it.  I checked on TractorData.com just to make sure.

Probably won't make much difference if you are just going to flip it though.

Hmmm.... innarestin'. I'll hafta look at it a bit more closely. Mebbe someone replaced the engine at some point, or, as you say, it's not really a 116... curiouser and curiouser.

Yeah, after messing about with it for a few minutes, it's clear that's not the original engine. First, it has a pull start on top, that faces forward - under the hood. So it's a bit awkward to try to pull start it, because you have to pull the cord at an angle to avoid bashing your knuckles on the hood. Also, the choke knob and cable are gone, leaving just a hole in the dashboard, and this engine has an automatic choke, hooked to the governor, if I'm seeing the linkages correctly (which are a bit hard to see).

I got the engine to fire up a bit, using starting fluid, but it seems I need to open up the carb and clean it to get it to run right.
