I am not sure if dad had posted pics of this Ride-a-Matic yet. This is the newest model they made with the knuckle looking grill. Currently we have the motor off and starter generator. Going to take the starter up to get rebuilt by a local shop.

I think the motor is going to fire pretty easily. Seems to have good compression at least with the compression release. We do have spark with it. Currently carb is sitting in a sea foam bath over night. Going to order a gasket kit for the motor and a rebuild kit for the carb. I tried getting the motor to pop by squirting a little gas in the carb and rope starting it. Didn't have any luck though.

Biggest question I have is the drive mechanism on these things. I know on the older one that dad has you can pull the one pin on the sprocket to get it to freewheel. This one however I can only guess the center position for the shifter on the deck would be neutral. I know where the vari drive neutral is as that is still marked. Also with the shifter on the deck I am thinking that the two notches to the left would be for reverse and the two on the right would be forward?

Yes it is the ugly one for 1962. I gotta say though that I like the looks of it. I actually think I may like it better then the two older versions.

The shifter between your legs is for the Hi/Low speeds including reverse.

The versa-Matic drive operates the same way as the older ones.

Does that mean there is a pin that can be pulled from the rear chain driven sprocket to get it to freewheel? I thought I crawled down and looked but didn't see anything but the brake drum is also in the way of seeing too much.

I did download the manual for it in the manuals section but didn't see anything about free wheeling.

I drug this thing in to the garage the other week. Finally had a chance to work on it this week. We got the shifter figured out now. The furthest slot to the left is forward high, next one to the right is neutral on that side. Middle is reverse and on the right side the furthest slot to the right is forward slow, and one just to the left is neutral again.

We got it running finally. We bought a carb kit and gasket kit from Doc and I rebuilt the carb over two weeks ago. Got it all back together and had some issues with the carb leaking because of the needle not seating. From what I could tell even though we cleaned the tank out there was still some debris getting stuck in the needle. Finally worked through that and managed to get it to fire off. Drove it around a little bit also. Best thing is, absolutely no smoke.

One issue though is it doesn't always fire off. We checked spark with a timing light and you could see it was missing. Decided to change it over to battery ignition. Got the swap done tonight other than getting a new coil. Used one of my spare coils that should have an external resistor and it fired right off. Definitely a cool little tractor. I think the grill on this Bolens Ride-a-matic is one of my favorites.
