Last night I fed the dogs like I always do.  Achilles came in and as always sat there and waited until I put the food down and then gave him the signal to eat.  He was just fine and then we let him back out to do his business.  A while later the wife let him back in and said something wasn't right.  We watched him for a bit and then he started bringing his dinner back up.  By this time it was 11:30PM so we called our son and he came over to help us get him to an emergency Vet.  They wanted over $800 just to diagnosis what was wrong, then more to treat him and we could not afford a vet bill like that. We had them give him something for pain and some O2 and that seemed to help. We planned to take him to our regular vet today,  he made it through the night but as we were getting ready he left us.

The wife had called our Vet's office first thing this morning to make sure they were open.  She didn't get an answer but she left a message.  The Doctor called her back just after he passed and he said it sounded like a classic heart attack.

We've lost dogs before, but for me this is one of the harder ones to deal with.  He was my buddy.

RIP my friend.

So sorry to hear this Bill.   Makes me wonder if he may have been snake bitten?  I know too well how hard it is to lose a dog buddy.

Sorry for your loss. Every one is different, but they are all the same--- they give us their all and ask nothing in return but to be with us. I could get started on a rant over the way the vet. treated you as this clearly was not a frivolous call, he could have been more caring, etc. etc., but, Hey, my opinion won't change things. My thoughts are with you.

My heart goes out to you brother. When we lose a beloved pet people who don't have pets never under stand how deeply it hurts us. Trust me he was able to touch a small part of your life but you were there to touch all of his may god bless and keep you.

Bill, sorry for the loss. Hope the suffering was minimal and the passing was easy.
It sounds as he left behind a legacy of good times and friendship.
