A fella from the UK is on 'the other forum', is trying to pin down what year his H16 was built.  He needs that for licensing it.

I am trying to help, but I've run into another bit of Bolens 'weirdness'.

His data tag shows:  MODEL: 1656   Serial: 0103740

Looking at my documentation it shows the 1656-01 as being built in 1973.

Knowing that production runs sometimes spanned multiple years, I looked for the H16 in the following years and ran into the 'weirdness'.

The next time that the H16 shows up is in 1976 with the -02 and -03.

It's not shown in 1974 and 1975.

Is it possible that Bolens didn't produce the H16 in those two years, and then brought it back in 1976?  Or was it just accidently omitted in the listing for 1974 and 1975?

Anyone have any insight into this?

I'm sure that one of our UK members can give us the strait dope on it, but I am of the understanding that they need to license them if they drive them on public roads.

I would just tell them it is a 1973. If we can't figure it out certainly the officials over there won't either.

Old Buzz is correct. In the UK (and I believe the EU) any mechanically propelled vehicle used on a public road has to be licensed/registered and believe it or not there is a minimum age as well and they too have to have a licence!

If it is used on a public road then the driver also has to have a minimum of 3rd party insurance as well.

Fortunately the steering wheel is in the centre unlike American cars where it is on the wrong side :-)

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency do accept an approximate year of manufacture if there is sufficient evidence to back it up.

Not sure if politics played a part in answering your question or not. 1974 was the year Nixon was impeached and then resigned from office. Many businesses and Wall Street got shaken up and the economy was in question. Who knows.
