Ok I can honestly say I don't know the purpose of a condenser on an ignition system.  I am very mechanically inclined and love to tinker but don't know the purpose of the condenser.

What brings this on is dad's 10hp briggs 234300 series engine.  We have had nothing but trouble's with this thing since we decided to rebuild it.  we have it all together and running but it would not run at HI rev's.  After playing with it for awhile this afternoon I noticed that dad had not put the condenser back on.  I would not have thought it would have run without the condenser but it did.  Could that be the cause of the engine cutting out at HI revs?

Yes.

In very basic terms the condenser stores electricity [spark] and allows for a hotter spark when the points open.  Without a condenser, or a properly working condenser, the spark doesn't have time to build up between firings of the plug and you will get very weak spark at anything above idle.

Also, the condenser draws power away from the points.  When a condenser goes bad, along with a poor running engine, the points will burn the contacts pretty quick.
