Somewhere I had read that if you replaced the gear(s) in the side of the thrower with another one of a different size and teeth you could make it work better--- the problem is that I can not remember where I read this--- can anyone help?

I have a 49 blower as well although I bought it used and am rebuilding it before using it.  On the large sprocket you can reduce the size. Many have gone to 34 teeth. Some go smaller but 34 seems to be the sweet spot.  I think there is a discussion on WeekendFreedommachines about this topic.

Found this on WFM this morning.  This is one of many 49 rebuilds over there.

I have the gearbox apart on mine right now. The gears are in excellent condition. It just needs the inner bearings replaced and the keys are worn in the gears. The small sprocket is worn on mine and I haven't gotten into repairing that yet.
