I was curious to see how often everyone else sharpens their mower blades during the mowing season. I seem to usually be able to get away with only once a year as long as I don't hit anything LOL. I have been debating doing it twice a year but I haven't decided yet or not.

I always sharpen my blades myself and have never had a problem doing so. I would like to write a little how to on doing it yourself but haven't had time to do it yet.

Usually every spring before mowing season and then it's just to take the bigger nicks out.I don't put a sharp edge on just make sure there balanced as good as I can get them. Over the course of the summer they take lots of abuse.I have lots of trails to cut and meadows plus the lawn.Dug as many of the big rocks out as I could and hopefully will do more this year. These are a bit hard on the baldes .LOL Larry:D

Every spring.........use a angle grinder and don't make them too sharp. I use the mower to windrow leaves in the fall, so they are pretty beat up when I put it away for the winter.......I bought new blades for my lawn tractor last fall. The old ones were real torn up.

2 maybe 3 times a year. I run a Ransome 3 wheeler, it's the main grass cutter, 18hp 60" cut, in the spring when grass is heavy I cut once a week and it takes me 6 hrs. non stop to cut everything once. I love the look of a large wide open lawn with a few trees in it.

Just once a year. I have found that they were not too bad even after a year. I put about 3 hours a week on my LT during mowing season. I use an angle grinder, the blades twist and curve too much to use the bench grinder.

With a little blushing, I have to admit that I have never tried to sharpen blades before. I usually just buy new ones or deal with bent grass. HA!

I do mine as needed. I check them as part of the preflight routine. Usually end up needing a touchup every other or every third mowing.
I was told by a pro once to keep them sharp enugh to cut instead of tear, following that advice I found the yard looks better, holds up better during dry spells, and most importantly to me with the same hight grass using the same gear I will use less gas with sharp blades.
And as with any tool, touchups are a lot easier than refurbishing, and if it turns colors when your grinding...well you just destroyed it...
More on that when the topic comes up.

I generally sharpen twice a year. The first time is just after the first mow of the season.
