for a Crafstman 917.25560 with a Briggs 283707 type-02170-1, code-91100131 12HP? Looking for one for an elderly friend. Brought me his with a bad motor. Can't afford a new one or to spend a lot of money. If I could get a new short block He could probably afford that with shipping and I would install it for him. Thanks for any info or help on this one. Roger.

I have a Briggs 12.5 hp vertical sitting under my work bench.  It is missing the syncro-balance mechanism.  Not sure what shipping would be, but if you are stuck, I might be able to figure something out.  It would be dirt cheap.  Shipping would be the killer.  I no it was almost $62 to send 35 lbs to Virginia, US.

Making a few calls today to see if anyone has one locally. This is the first one I've seen that the engine wouldn't turn over, and then when I did get it to turn over oil came out the exhaust. Think that is bad ? LOL.   I haven't gotten any deeper into it yet but after some calls today I will look further.   Thanks.                  Roger.

Roger, did you pull the plug and try to turn it? Maybe it is just hydrolocked with the oil? I didn't look at the engine by number but if its an overhead valve engine, a blown head gasket could cause that.

Just got done with the calls and now it's out to the garage to pull the plug, charge the battery and see whats what. It isn't an overhead valve it's a 91 yr model with Cast iron sleeve 12 hp.. I'll take some pictrures and a get a little more info in a while.                                                         Roger.

Got some time today to work on it a little bit. Got the engine to turn over and actually start. Problem is that it sucks the oil out of the motor and makes it act like a whole neighborhood fogger. Still no camera but the motor rund good. Good except for the smoking so badly. In turning it over by hand it has good compression. Good enough tha when it gets to compression top it can't be truned by hand with out assistance of a wrench. I put a little gas in it and a different battery and the dang thing started right up. Wasn't expecting that. As I said it smoke really bad. Thinking it's a broken ring / rings or stuck valve? Any suggestions?   Thanks.

Roger.

Depends, pop the head and have a look at the piston, bring to TDC and shake it, look for oil washing on the piston. Wet carbon build up on the head can raise the compresson a bit.
