I know this engine was built in the first half of the 1950s and is 3 hp. It looks like a Briggs.  If a fellow wanted one, what would he be looking for?

the 9 isn't really that easy to find, seems like most tractors went from a model 8 briggs, of 2 to 2 1/2 hp, some even 2 3/4 right on to the model 14, which was a 5hp. Most of the time if you see a 9, its on a simp tractor. Wards went with wissy engines to get their bigger hp.

I find this whole hp of engines thing very odd. Some have even numbers like 1 1/2,2 3,5 etc, others rated theirs at goofy things like 1.8 or 6.3. The even odder ones are the rated hp at 3000, 3200, or 3600 rpm's, all in the same basic engine.

I have found two that look like the model 9: one is 8hp and the other 5hp.  Is there any cosmetic difference between the 3hp and the 5 or 8hp versions?  Are the larger hp engines bigger or just bored larger?  If I stick a 5hp version on a tractor will (smart) people notice without reading the tag?

Well its both, each engine is larger than the next, inside and outside. There are several in this group, 9,14, 19, 23, so you get 3,5,7.25 and 8.25 hp. Some times the number hp is fudged a little on the top end two. A 19 is basically a bored out model 14. There is a huge physical size difference in the 19 and 23, and a 9 is pocket sized compared to the 23. if you cant find a 9, then I would just put the 14 on it and let it go for now. one will turn up as soon as your done looking.
