While getting ready to flail mow today I now see what Bolen put their muffler for the 1886 in the horizontal position. Upon start up there is a lot of black the comes out and ends up all over the hood , but it is a tired old engine anyways.

For Oldbuzzrd: The flail in tall grass really made the 1886 go right against the gov a lot. The 1250 would do it but not well in very tall (4foot or better) green grass.

4ft??!!  sounds like someone needs some Full Size tractors to work, not overwork the little guys!  OR, mow much more often?

Mine blows some black smoke at start up too. The side of the hood by the exhaust is a bit stained but oh well that's the way it goes.
