Picked this one up today.  I'm thinking it's a MTD but there are no ID tags on it that I can see.  It's had its share of mods.  Anyone know model number and approx. year of this bugger?

I don't think MTD either, besides it says right on it FORD!   Maybe that's one of those Springfeild or other makers that weren't around long? With that one-piece metal dash makes it not be MTD to me. Could it be a Gilson?  What kinda drive or trans does it have?

Definitely MTD but I'm not a 100% on the model. I'm thinking late '60s 660 or 659. I'll see what I can come up with when I get home. Could also be what they considered a lawn tractor and I have no idea what their model numbers were.

I am definitely not a tractor expert by any means but I have to agree that it is an MTD. I have an old "MTD Eight Hundred" out in a shed. Used it for a couple of decades. It shares a lot of characteristics with this "Ford"! Someone has altered JDSlednut's considerably but here's a couple of pics to compare.

Now I feel bad.  I completely forgot about this after I commented. :(

Looking at the op manual, I'm pretty sure this is a model 650.  One op manual covers the 650 / 652 / 655 / 660 / 665.

650 is the basic tractor

652 has plug in 120Vac start

655 has larger rear Terra tires (the inner set on the OP pictures are stock)

660 has battery 12Vdc electric start

665 has battery start and Terra tires

There are manuals on MTD's site for '67 and '68.  They also list one for '66 but it's not available online.  There's a similar model in '69 but it's a model 559 and it appears to have a different steering wheel.  The engine numbers will pin down the exact year if you can't find a tag on the tractor.

Manuals can be found at:  http://manuals.mtdpr...m/mtd/Public.do

Enter 147650 as the model number for the '67 and 148650 for the '68 manual.  Then you can use any number for the serial number.
