Model 144-998-190.........I'm guessing MTD Model 998.  Looking for the proper starter for it. As near as I can tell, the number on the bottom plate is 9304137, with the "7" punched over a hole in the base plate and not easy to see if it is a 7. It's my boys and he "burned out" something at the other end of the starter and wants to piece it in rather than refurb(read remove and refurb....$$) the whole starter. His GT, his call.  Any ideas as to what this starter number is or should be?

This may help narrow it down but you will need to know the engine model number - stamped on the sheet metal. Usually on top or bottom of the fan flywheel housing.

These small starters are common to many B&S engines. If the magnets are broken from over heating, it may not be worth trying to repair it. I get many of my engine parts from http://www.jackssmallengines.com/

Is the ring gear on the flywheel aluminum or steel?  I guess they have different pinion gears accordingly?

I can get you a starter for a steel ring gear engine for a really good price.  $89 brand new.

The GT belongs to my one son, so it may be a while till I check. Also, I'll have to see what he has in mind. I do appreciate all your help.

No problem.  You might have to PM me to get my attention if you decide to need one.  I can get the aluminum version also, just not as good a price.

Thank you, superaben and VTXrider for your help. He called me today and told me he picked one up at Messicks , a tractor biz here in the county and was ready to mow. I did send him info that you guys had and if it was a suggestion it worked!!  Thanks again.
