Now there's one I have never heard of before. Just hope I can remember it
Well, it's just something I noticed when hooking up alternators. Whenever they are "excited", they magnetize the armature.

I have used that method myself for years, you can also check the back of the Alt. when running to see if it's magnetized, if so it's charging.

So should I notice anything out of the ordinary? I know that im getting close to 13.5 to 13.9 charging while running. The diode might be it. Would make sense if the current is heading back as a draw from the alt.

Heres a quick ( and poorly shot) video of it chugging last week. I need to def get a bigger battery with more crank amps. Would you guys sudjest around 550 or so? Problem is the size for battery storage. If it wasnt for the manual pto, I would fit a normal size battery, but I have to cut it down below 8x8 roughly.

8x8 being length & width, or length by height? That's awfully small for any auto battery, but there IS one I found below those measurements with 525 CCA. Interstate MT-26 Battery
Length 8 inches Width 6.75 inches Height 7.75 inches

If your not going to be running it in the winter you can get by with a smaller battery. Maybe two smaller batteries if you don't have much room in one place. My Dexta came from the factory that way. One under the fuel tank and one on the running board.

Actually, you can get a lawn/garden type battery that cranks out 450CCA. Plenty for all but bitter cold weather. But I doubt their life would equal a car type battery.

The good news is that this tractor will be inside the garage during the winter. Bad news is that my truck will be outside.
Priorities, right?

Wow I am very impressed with this thread. It has been a big help to me with my simplicity conversion. You answered so many of my questions as far as rotation, cooling and pto thanks for posting this and a really great job.

Iwill check in on that battery and see if someone locally have it.
550 CCA enough?
