So I had my 990 at a recent show and was approached by someone wanting to sell a 12 hp Unico 860.  We got to talking and he also had a deck for my Meteor he'd be willing to sell.   I've been wanting a gear drive MTD to go along with the 990 so I ended up visiting him last Sunday and picked up both items.  Turns out the guy has a 300+ tractor collection and he acquired the 860 as part of a package deal but didn't really want it and wanted it to go to a good home.  It runs and drives ok but doesn't shut off by itself.  When you see the wiring it's no surprise.  The thing that helped decide to get it was the MTD wheel weights.  Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately if you don't like the Unico green, a previous owner painted it up like a John Deere and blacked out the Unico sticker.

it's a '68 and the engine was assembled less than a week before I was born.

You can make out some of the original Unico green in the first shot.

A Unideere

Or is it a Johnico?

P.S.  An addition thread on the seller's collection will follow.

Nice 860. Is that the model that uses a clutch and an angle drive to feed the rear end?

The original wheel weights are a rare find.

Yes. The 860 and 960 have the right angle drive. I hope to own a 960 someday.

These are probably my favorite GT, I love the grilles on these not to mention the way their built. You going to keep it green...Unico green that is. Daniel's Unico is etched in my brain.
