Tra-10D And A Stubborn Oil Drain Plug ...

Finally got around to pulling out the TRA-10D motor from the 1050 I recently got. I went to drain the oil before giving it a degreaser bath, but, ran into a stuck, rounded off oil plug. Well, vise grips didn't work after soaking with PBlaster. Tried cutting a screw slot with a Dremel tool. Good slot but the screwdriver just broke away more of the plug. Dremel again to flatten the surface and now drilling with a left handed drill bit to use an extractor. The extractor is in but, the plug isn't budging. More PBlaster. Still isn't budging. I'm afraid I will break the extractor if I put any more torque to it.

 

Any suggestions?

Weld a bolt head onto the plug....

I had an oil pan just like that on a Farmall tractor.  Wouldn't budge for the world.  The only way I got it loose was taking the oil pan off (granted, harder to accomplish on a TRA) and clamping the plug in a vise and turning the oil pan.

You may have to drill through the plug, let the oil drain and then enlarge the hole until you get it thin enough that it can be pried away from the threads and removed. It isn't easy but I've done it on a few fittings that were broken by gorillas on high pressure pumps at work, some of them were stainless steel.

I bought a set of these that are for rounded off heads, I haven't used them yet and figured if they bail me out once they'll pay for themselves.

In some of these cases, I've had good results with a small plumbing pipe wrench. The more time you give PB Blaster the better it works. I needed 6 months on a brake bleeding nipple but it worked. Good Luck, Rick

The problem with those tapered extractors is that they exert outward pressure to grip the part, but that also increases the holding force between the plug & the block.

 

If you break the extractor, you will have an even bigger problem !!!!

 

I believe JDBrian's method is what you will have to end up doing.

There's no turning back now, looks like you will have to drill out the plug then carefully knock the plug away from the threads. Dont go any further with that tap, its tapered and may break off!

That easy-out appears to be a bit large for that app.

 

Drill a smaller hole and use a smaller easy-out... bruce is correct on the outward pressure. by looking at the pic.

 

If you get a smaller easy-out in there, like the one you have there, ( looks like it has a good bite )  You could add a little heat on the cast around the plug.. that my help...       Good luck and keep us posted..

Weld a Flat washer over the plug and fill the hole in, then weld a nut onto the washer and tap on them as it cools with a hammer. You should be able to back it right our after that as the heat will break the rust loose.

If you drilled all the way through, then there will be metal bits in  there.  In that case, I'd go ahead & drill just to the block threads, then chase out remaining bits with a tap.  The remove the engine back plate to clean it all up good.

It was pretty near that, but ....

 

So, someone mentioned the spiral extractor expanding against the threads and just making it tighter. Well, I switched to the straight type of extractor, tapped a few times with a hammer, gave it a twist and "Voila" .... IT'S OUT!!!  :dancingbanana:

 

Now to match up this plug and close it up to clean the motor.  :D

I should have mentioned, on one of my tractors, I broke off an oil pipe flush to the block.  Extractor only made it tighter.  I drove a tapered square chisel into it, turned the chisel with vice grips, and it spun right out.
