Well, I found out first hand that Kohler pistons split in half.  I was reading a post about one or two weeks ago on here about pistons splitting and mentioned that I never heard that before.  I know now.  So have to get it apart and see what other damage was done.  Have another 14 engine, so I will see if it is any good and maybe fix it up and put it in to replace the 12, then fix 12 for spare engine.  No painting on this project. More of a rush to get it back into service. 15% more power from 12 to 14, said on weekend freedom machines web site.  Noel

Had it happen on 2 stroke motocross bikes, but never on a mower type engine myself.

I haven't taken it apart yet, but I believe that is what happened to my 16 HP in the Ford! And it didn't overheat!

Not all apart yet, but base is off. Turn it over and you see bottom half moving and not top part.  Parts of oil ring in base.  Will post pictures.  Only was running for 5 minutes and checked oil before starting.  Noel

Sounds suspiciously like it got too hot, could have been running a bit lean, or the points were a bit off, either can cause a kohler to run hot inside without being very noticable otherwise, and splitting at the oil ring is a pretty common result. Its alot better than having trouble in the bottom end tho, should still be able rebuild it at a reasonable cost.
