I'm looking seriously at buying a Satoh/Mitsubishi S470 "Buck" Tractor with a FEL, backhoe, box scraper and rock rake. The price is very cheap.  Only problem is the engine is starting to knock. Parts are readily available, but the wife doesn't want me to get tied up in another long-term project (Gee--I don't understand why she would feel that way!!???).

So rather than rebuild the engine, I'm looking for a good runner that will fit in it.

I understand that the Mitsi K3As are the same block and can be used though they're less hp. I have a source for them, but don't want to use it unless I can easily tweak the fuel system and get some more hp from it.

I know the same engine was used in the Bolens HDT1000, and some of the Iseki-Bolens tractors IIRC.  Toro also used K3-series engines in their mowers--the 325D is one that comes to mind.

So, I need to find a price on a good running K3B, or any of the newer K3-series engines if they will work without major modification--I don't mind swapping out bell housings, etc.

Please let me now what you have and what you want for it.

Regards,

Smitty

The GroundsMaster 325-D used the K3D engine as well.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Case/IH 234, 235, 245, 255, and 275 all used K3x engines.

From what I can gather, the K3x engines ranged from the 0.773L K3A rated at 15 hp. to the 1.496L K3M rated at 30 hp.

K3A - 0.773L - 15hp

K3B - 0.847L - 17hp

K3C - 0.899L - 18.5hp

K3D - 0.978L - 22hp

K3E - 1.061L - 24hp

K3F - 1.117L - 25hp

K3G - 1.235L - 23hp

K3H - 1.289L - 25hp

K3M - 1.496 - 30hp

Yep... I knew your mower had a K3 series engine, just couldn't remember what the mower model number was.  A friend here local has a K3D out of a Toro 325, but it's been sitting uncovered behind his house for at least 3 years, so I'm not really confident it will run without some major work...

Good info to tuck away, OB... What I'd like to find out is if any of the larger K3s will bolt up in place of a K3B... I did get a parts manual for the K3A, K3B and K3C, and many part interchange, but there are also several engine configurations in each series, so it's possible even another K3B might not fit due to lack of mounting flanges for the front of the tractor, etc... I'll just need to continue research it...

Thanks,

Smitty

I wouldn't hesitate to take a closer look at that engine. I don't know which way the intake and exhaust ports are facing but if it isn't stuck it might be worth trying to get running.

Thanks, Chris... I'll have to take a close look.  I only wish the tractor was here so I could put the two side by side to see if it will swap in.

Talked with Bill Rogers at Valley Power Equipment. He has a good stock of Mitsubishi parts--both domestic and brey market, and is very knowledgeable--also very friendly and helpful.

Bill says that the K3C engine will also work, but isn't sure about the K3D or -E.

I have a K3B or K3C complete that came out of a mower--it's been sitting for a couple years, but still cranks all the way around.  It includes the aircleaner, starter, etc. It belongs to a friend so I'd have to check on the price, but I suspect it would be around $600-$700.

Let me know if you're interested, I'll PM some pictures.
