We have been looking for a new GT. Mostly for mowing but of course other capabilities are welcome. Pickings are sorta slim and often over inflated in my area but I think I may have pegged down a couple decent choices. A JD 216 that I can get for $600 and a 317 (with replacement Onan engine) that I can get for $800 (though double the haul) Both are suppose to be in great running condition, pics look good. Nothing extra just mower deck but the 317 has new blades.

Anyone with exp with these machines have 2 cents to throw in on one or the other? Thanks

If used just for mowing, the 317 is far superior to the 216 in maneuverability due to the hydro vs. manual tranny and better turning radius. The hydro lift is a bonus, assuming the 216 is manual lift. The 16 hp Kohler would probably use the same amount of fuel to mow that the Onan does.

The 216 is a manual lift. I would most likely be adding a tiller at some point.

Finding a tiller for a 200 series is twice as easy and three times cheaper than a 300 series.

The 317 has 2 sets of hydraulic outlets, one with a float. That means you can do an angle and lift/float for a front blade. It also has turning brakes if that's something you would use. It's hydro, but has a hand control for speed which many find awkward. Weak spots are motor mounts and drive shaft couplers, as well as the original KT17 ser. 1 which has already been dealt with. The twins are a more refined engine than the K341 but tend to be more expensive to repair.

I'd go for the 317 because of the hydro-static transmission, but as stated the tiller will be more expensive.  And, if the tractor doesn't have the rear PTO, that will cost nearly as much as the tiller & hard to find!

Best option, buy both, 216 for tilling, 317 for mowing!  ~~  Lowell

I have owned both gear drives and hydrostats.  Spent many hours of my youth on a 210 and a 212s.  Go for the 300 series as the hydrostatic drive is well worth the price of admission.

Im leaning towards the 317 because the overall seemingly excellent condition and Onan engine. The owner actually knows what hes talking about it seems too.
