What is the CORRECT way to remove the vent plugs on the front axle of the John Deere X738 when changing the fluid?

Not sure what you mean by vent plugs. Is a 738 a hydraulic front wheel drive or the mechanical type like used on the older x585? That type of info. is generally in the Owners manual. A quick call to your local JD dealer service dept. should get you the info. you need.

Do not remove the plugs until you have drained everything and ready to refill the system. Remove the fill plug on the axle, and the vent plugs on both drive motors. Fill until you have fluid at both vents, then close everything up.

Are you doing a 50 hour service or are you at 100 hours already?

Planning ahead !  Making sure I have everything I need on hand. The vent caps take a BIG allen (Hex ) wrench.  Thanks

While on the subject of maintenance,  I just changed the oil for the first time.  I traded my Z445 zero turn mower and got the X738.  Oil changes on Z445 E A S Y !!!  On X738 ...ARGGGH !!! Does anybody have recommendation on a tool to access the EXTREMELY hard to get at drain plug.  There's got to be an easier way.
