I have a Briggs 6S that won't suck gas out of the tank (carb on tank Pulsa-Jet).  It runs fine if you pour gas into the carb through the air filter housing.  I think the stem is plugged.  Any ideas on how to clean it?  Is there something else that could be causing the problem?

Have you checked the pump diaphragm to see if it's OK?

You're right, the pickup is messed up.  That is a Vacu-Jet carb, very simple to work on and they always work flawlessly when they are right.  They have a little brass check ball inside the end that prevents gas from going back down the pickup into the tank, usually that ball gets stuck.  Soak the whole thing in carburetor cleaner as long as the pickup tube is brass.  If it is nylon, it is cheaper to replace it.  It should be brass.

The old rule was that you should be able to suck through the tube (from the carb side) but not be able to blow out.  Gas tastes good, anyway.

Thanks Ben, I forgot these were Vacu-jet carbs.

Thanks for the answer, and sorry to mislead you on the pulsa-jet vs vacu-jet issue.
