hey guys got a troy bilt mower for 50bucks has a kohler command 12.5 and a peerless trans the model of trans is peerless 930-023 it is stuck in one gear and the shifter wont change gears what could problem be you can feel it click into each gear shifter does shift trans but doesnt change the gear i need help please help me out thanks jason from pa

It probably has "shift keys" that lock the chosen gear to the shaft.  These keys often break, or wear rounded to where they won't lock in.  It's a good chance, being it's stuck in a gear that a key is broken off & lodged into that gear.   Hard to say without being there.

I would imagine the rear is like the one in my little craftsman. It somehow got moisture in it, my shifter key and collar rusted to the shaft and presented same symptoms you described. I took it apart, cleaned it all up, new grease ( should've used a heavy oil) and that was 4 yrs ago, still working fine today.

 

I poured water out of this one, no seals were leaking or any cracks, but full of water. You can see the shifter collar on the shaft, it got rusted and froze along with the two keys in the slots.
