I have a mower deck that I got with a 1050. It looks like it will fit on my 853. I don't have any manual on it so I guessed at how it mounts. Does anyone know what the adjustment on this lift rod is for? I'm guessing it has something do do with cutting height? Also, I don't think this other piece belongs to Bolens I've never seen one. I want to be sure this will work before I remove it and do a restoration on it. Would anyone have the user guide for this deck? Thank you for any ideas.

That spring mechanism has nothing to do with height.

That's just there to assist with  "Free floating" (Anti scalping feature)

You got it set the right way.

Thank you for the info. Yah I don't have a clue as to what that funny looking brace is. Someone painted the deck green and I'm wondering if that brace is JDeere. I keep forgetting about coming over to this forum. I signed up a long time ago. I need to be on more. Thanks again for the info. I think I'm ready to dig in and restore the deck. It don't need much but I'll disassemble it and inspect, clean and fix whatever it needs. Then it is getting painted red. It should look great on the 853 (which I need to post on here)

So that deck was from a 1050 that I picked up for parts. The deck is in great shape. Being that it will be going onto my 853 I want to paint it red. All the Bolens ads I see show it with a red deck and black tiller.

The time period correct deck for the 1050 would be the early style green decks.

The 853 was sold with a red deck and newer style mounting brackets when the tractors were new but decks will interchange with one another.

So I don't have the right deck for this tractor? I do have the newer style decks, the ones that go on my 1556's. Would that be the deck that should go on this tractor? I can always make the swap and restore one of those decks instead of this one.

If your trying to be 100% timer period correct then this deck would have not been sold with that 853

They would have been sold with the new style Red decks that used the lift style pictured below:

Well that is interesting. I know their ad's were rather unique. My ad shows the 853 with a brown grille and white 853 letters instead of green which I have never seen. My 1556 ad's also show a brown grill. So that deck appears to be a bit different than the green one I have and yet different than the decks that are on my 1556's. I may just go with the green one, paint it red and call it a day. Thank you for all your replies on this.

The 1970 Models did not have a brown colored grille and still utilized the "Husky Man" Decals

The 1971 Models started using the dark Grille with new "Husky Dog Decals"

Yours is a 1970 853 and should look like the one I posted a picture of.

Thank you for the info. I thought it was a 1968. Also mine does look like the picture you posted. It has the green numbers on it. It's still the oldest one I own by 1 year. Just beats my 1886-01.

That hitch sure looks like something bolens from maybe a walkbehind or something. Could this be the 12a hitch maybe?
