No news today. Condition the same. Alert when the pain meds mellow out. Then extreme pain. Meds pass out.

This morning at 9 he was life flighted to upmc. He is on the ventilator and a feeding tube. He is unresponsive at the moment.

He is pretty much living off the machines right now.

No change so far today.  I am back down south for work until Friday afternoon.  But if my wife needs me I am only an hour and half away from the hospital.

UPMC wants/needs to do a surgery as Acute Pancreatitis which has developed into infected pancreatic necrosis.  Which is very bad.  Without surgery the mortality rate is 100%.  As the infection spreads and leads to multi organ failure.  Basically you slowly degrade as the infection spreads.  No antibiotic is remotely strong enough to even touch the power of this infection.  You may slow it but not stop it.

They however can not do surgery because he currently has pneumonia.  Every day that he can't have surgery reduces his chance for the surgery to be successful.  If the infection is caught early, and surgery is done immediately the mortality rate is 30%.

Even with good health and getting the surgery there is only a 70% chance of survival.  Which from my reading the 70% is much improved from the chances just 5 years ago.

I the plan is to keep him on the vent, feeding tube, keep him sedated with pain killers, and flood him with antibiotics.  The feeding tube will allow his pancreas to "rest"  That way no further damage is done by digestion ect.  The vent will help them keep his lungs free of fluid.  The antibiotics will slow the infection, and the pain killers to keep him free of pain.

I think the step they left out here is to pray.  The deck is stacked against him currently.  He has picked up just about every terrible side effect to this problem.  Normally a fella would be diagnosis with pancreatitis and would sit in the hospital for a few days, enjoy some good pain killers and antibiotics then go home with a clean bill of health and a new diet to follow.

Once again the family and myself greatly appreciate all of your prayers and support.  You guys are the best group of people I've never met(face to face!)  Thank you all so much.

They are sending him home with home health nurses. He will still be on the feeding tube and iv antibiotics and oxygen. But he has a chance at recovery and can rest at home.

He isn't out of the woods. Still has the necrotic tissue in his pancreas. Has a hole in his pancreas and other problems.

My wife and mother in law think it's great he can come home. But part of me thinks they are sending him home because there isn't much else they can do and he can either make it or not at home.

He was supposed to come home Monday. It was delayed till today and they delayed it again.

I haven't heard why. I'm in Morgantown till Friday afternoon and I haven't gotten to talk to my wife.

My wife has accepted that he isn't improving. Mother in law not so much. She is bouncing around waiting for him to come home for the birthday party and memorial day party...

I hope his homecoming is what everyone hopes for.
I understand delays in going home. Keep on going, knowing that the good Lord has a plan.

Well I didn't post anything lately for fear of jinxing it. He came home Friday and was doing great. He went to the birthday party. Celebrated memorial day with everyone. We wheeled him down to the pool area and he had a good time. He was doing great. His o2 levels were even staying at 95% WITHOUT ANY O2.

Then yesterday he started having pain. This morning he was life flighted back to Pittsburgh.

More pain and swelling in his stomach area. He is back on pain killers and o2.
