Did they make an 18hp single of that vintage? I thought 16 was as big as they went on 1 cylinder.

They may built a M18 as Kohler did build a K-361 18 HP engine.

If it's running and not knocking or smoking awful, that's a great deal for someone with an old tractor like my Gilson 16.
