This thread will feature pictures and a little info about each large frame that was produced.


Hopefully this will be helpfull to those who are new to Bolens or want to know some more info about their machine :)

The 1250 was the first of the large frame Bolens tractors, first making its debut in 1967.
"1967 was a turning point in the way Bolens manufactured tractors for many years to come. For the first time in history, a garden tractor implemented a heavy duty, hydrostatic driven transaxle into one complete assembled unit. This hydro package was so new at the time, no one outside of the Bolens manufacturing facilities were to attempt repairs on the unit, not even authorized Bolens dealers. Warranty and repair service consisted of removal of the complete transaxle and replacing with a new hydro package. The old unit was to be sent back to the factory for failure analysis. " The 1250 Featured the Wisconsin S-12D engine

The 1455 came into the Bolens world in 1969. This model was meant to replace the 1250. It featured a Bigger 14HP Wisconsin engine. And an improved eaton 12 Hydrostatic transmission.

The 1476 was manufactured from 1970-1971
The 1477 was made in 1971 ----- Outfitted with a heavier hydraulic control valve this time around not much changed from the 1455/1476

Info: Nearly identical to it's predecessor the 1455. It still had the Trusty 14HP Wisconsin Engine (S-14D). The most noticable difference was the debut of the "Husky Dog" Which was introduced in 1970 to coincide with the current advertising campaign at the time.

Years of production: 1971-1972 Still used the Eaton 12 Hydrostat
This time Bolens had some Bite to it. A kohler 18HP engine was used on them. Added were" Dual hydraulics allowed for power blade angling and lifting from the driver seat. A huge new 54" center mount mower deck was easily mowing the most daunting landscapes ever seen by non-commercial property owners. Only made for two years, the 1886 saw a total of 5 production runs. The 1886-01 thru 1886-04 were nearly all identical with only minor modifications from time to time. " quoted from sonny's Bolens site

The 1886 05 was built in 1972, and 06 was manufactured in 1973. And was fitted with the new Sundstrand 15 hydro pump. Gone was the Eaton 12 that Bolens had used for so long.

While the 1886-05 still used the same paint scheme the 1886-06(HT18) was painted in What would be Bolens new colors (Black and White)

(1973-1978) The HT20 received yet another power boost. Now fitted with a 19.5HP Kohler K532 Series engine. This machine was just about to do extraordinary things - with the optional new Backhoe attachment to compliment the already available front end loader*, Bolens was on its way once again to show the industry that they had the best Tractors and equipment out there on the Market.

1980-1981

1979 - 1987
"The last of the HT series line up. The HT23 received yet one last power upgrade. Now a full 23 horsepower. Also upgraded with a new 2 speed HI / LO range transaxle and Eaton 11 hydro pump. Familiar options from the HT18-HT20 carried over to the HT23 as well" Quoted from sonny's Bolens site

Yes, that is correct

Bolens began Powdercoating in the mid 70's

too bad they dont make them any more but if they did it would be alot of money to buy one some one should make modern day copys of them but i guess MTD holds the Patents so it would be hard to get around that

I have the original invoice for my HT23. Just the tractor cost over $5,200 in 1981.

My tractor came with the original invoice with attachments as well. I will have to look at it again to see what the total was - but I believe the Tiller, Mower Deck and Hydraulic Angle Blade raised the price by another 2000.00? I could be wrong - but I believe it was between 7-8000 total. I will confirm next time I make it over to the garage.

Looks like the only one that's missing is the HDT1000 which was for export only.  It has a 3-cyl water cooled Mitsubishi rated at 22 Hp. The HTD did have a longer hood, but other than that and the engine, it was identical to the HT23.

 

After being lucky enough to find one here in the States I've been trying to find out as much as I can about it.

 

What I've found so far indicates that it was produced in two versions.

 

In the 1996 Garden Way/Troy Built/Bolens Service Seminar Book it's listed as the model 2388-01 in 1982 and the 2388-02 in 1983.  Those are the only two years that it shows up in the lists.

 

However, in the Large Frame Service Manual on page 1-3 with  Rev. date of 3/85 there are specs for the 2388s.

 

Assuming that the 2388s was produced at the same time as the 2389s, which was the late model HT23 that was produced in 1984-1987, the one I have seems to be a 2388s as it has the Power Steering, Cruise Control, and Aux. Hydro cooler just as the 2389s had, and the same basic decal style which was used on the 1984-87 HT23.

 

I can not find a data tag on mine, nor can I even find any indication that there ever was a data tag on it in the place where it should be.

 

We can assume that it was produced in 1985-1987 time frame, but cannot say for certain what year(s).
