Can anyone tell me the purpose of the front bumpers,,  or guards on the front ends of a  mower deck ???

Are they for anti-scalp on the grass

do they just support the front lower pannel from being bent when gougeing the turf..

They seem to be in line with the outer blades  is it a guide for cutting width..

I see so many with different  setups........  Some have one some have two,,,,some have more support than others.....

some go all the way across the top of the deck to the rear wheels..

Mine are broken of and I'm thinking of putting some type of bracket back on..

Now I could make them to ,,,,,,,,     anti-scalp

just support the lower front from bending

add a plate and put on idler wheels

What have others done.......  I'm sure I'm not the first with this  situation.....OR what would you do to make it better

                    IDEAS  ???????                               Thanks         sodi

Yes,,,,,,Ok let's call them runners.. That's a good term

The loops on each side on front.....Not the roller pin one in the middle

Those are just anti scalping Runners that keep the deck even.

Bolens always referred to these as "Runners"

2014 Mower Deck 001.JPG

The hook on the left side of the deck.. or  runner..  some had 1,, some had one on each side of the front deck... There seems to be many variations over the years...

I have seen one on E-bay...  I can make one,,, that's not a problem...   They are welded on..

If you read my first post,,,,,,I was just wondering if any one has made one,,,,AND would you do a better job  fab-ing one up,,,   like extra support or anything...

There's got to be a reason why they broke,,,other than   mis-abuse to the deck it'self..

Looking for a better idea on paper before metal work begins

I have to say in all my years of using these decks and working with thm I have never seen one of these runners break.

Where's it broke?

Many revisions were made over the years as styles changed and different mounting systems were adapted.

I bet my son would have broken them lol   , Maybe you can find a rusted deck that they could be removed from ?

Both sides are broken off..  and now just sharp points sticking out the top.. about 1 inch out from the top of deck..

I'm thinking of useing some 3/16  X  1 inch flat stock and making some...

DR. B,,

I was just out getting a better look at my   (    missing  )   runners..

It looks more like some  IDIOT  torched them off    by looking at the jagged lines going across the top..    :wallbanging:
