Hello all, I normally post over on the john deere forum as I am a 318 owner. I know nothing about the wheelhorse line of tractors. What I do know is I was offered by a co-worker a free 520h. He told me it was a mid 90's model, has a deck and hydraulic blade with it. He also told me it burns as much oil as it does gas. He's tired of fiddling with it and told me to haul it away. From what my research had told me is it has the onan p220 and they aren't light on the wallet when they need parts. What am I looking at for a upper engine rebuild on this unit? I mean free is certainly hard to pass up... Thanks, Sean

If its free, its for me. You wont know what the problem is until you do a proper diagnosis. It could be as simple as a malfunctioning breather or it may need a ring job. Get it home then go through it. I've also seen where gas was getting into the oil, causing it to burn. Check the oil level and smell the oil. Good Luck, Rick

BTW When you get that running right you will not love JDs as much anymore. That is a great tractor.

i would not bother with it, just love your green stuff and give me your friends number. ha ha ha!!! you are asking for trouble, i started out with 7-8 deeres, now i have 30 horses, welcome to the red side, with onans sometimes its better just to repower if you have gone through it and it needs a major rebuild

That's a real nice free tractor. It's worth investigating what's up with the engine at the least.

Even if the engine is toast, it's well worth picking up. You can make a few bucks parting it out, if necessary.

Very capable GT. It's no 318 by any stretch of the imagination, IMO, but still very nice.

I have a '90 520-8, great Stallion. I can pickup the 520-H and save you from WHA!

Good luck with the WHA (Wheel Horse Addiction). All you'll be able to do is ease the pain and let the herd of Horses grow.
