Hello all, To start I am French and my English is not good but I'll do my best to make you understand.

I buy a bolens ht 20 (with sundstrand 15) with a transmission problems.

The transmission slip and run slow sometime reverse or forward.. I flush oïl and replace for new ATF type F oil and new filter. After that the tractor drive better but not perfect... I take off A valve in the transmission and the spring is broken , i replaced by a similar but not identic spring and the problem is reduce but not completly (The tractor move more faster and slip sometime when i play hard with the pedal)

Also the tractor has no neutral, the wheel turn in reverse and sometime in forward none stop ( i press a little bit on the pedal for the tractor rest in place) I try to adjust the linkage but no succes. Maybe because a valve is not good and do the wheel spin ..

What do you think? The new spring is not good or a other problem in the transmission?

Thank you for your help and sorry for my English is not good..
thank you

when i remove the bolt for take a valve, the valve is disassemble in the transmission..
The spring is broken, the ball is loose in the transmission and the bolt is not in good condition..

Welcome to GTTalk! You need to replace that valve. You can try our site sponsors for a used one or maybe try your local Sundstrand dealer. As far as the no neutral, that is a common problem with many tractors when the linkage gets worn or seized up. Looks for the parts manual or service manual for your tractor in our manuals section. Sometimes there are springs to hold the linkage in neutral and if they are missing you won't have a neutral position.

Hey guys !

I just bought that tractor.... And just found out the guy did some work on it other than change the Hydro filter and oil like he said... LOL !!!

Could an internal leak from a spool valve cause this ?

I was planning on taking the complete pump/ motor unit to an hydraulic shop, to test internal leaks and "zero" it properly... Has anyone done this before ??? Are these units reparable, or should try to get a good one ?

Thanks for your help !

I would start with the Bolens owners manual listed above. I would make sure all the Linkage adjustments are set as per the manual. The "not being in nuetral" problem is probably just the linkage.

The spool valve is not going to cause an "in gear" problem.

If you take it to a hydraulics shop, be ready for sticker shock. You are probably looking at more than $1500 to repair it.

Several of us here have taken those sundstrands apart and gotten them working again. Parts are available. The link to the manual is listed above.

Performance improved when you replaced that spring with one that was not quite the same. If you were able to find the exact same spring with the same tension I wonder if that would solve the problem.

I`ll pick the tractor up this week, and look for the linkage adjustments, and that spring to be factory correct...

I`ll keep you posted !

Hehe ! Got it like new for $ 8.97 !!!

Took it apart, and the 3 roll pins from the control lever to the trunion shafts, and from the shafts to the swash plate were broke in half, allowing oil pressure to move the plate forward or reverse, at any time when in "neutral position".

I bought some tempered roll pins, a couple sheet of gasket paper to cut new gaskets for the pump stages, and a few O-rings. The tractor drives like a charm now ! I even found a 33" tiller for 100$ in town !

I am now building a front end loader for it, does anybody have an idea of what dia. cylinder to use ? Maybe 2" , 2-1/2" ? I don't want it to be too strong, and end up bending the front axle...

Thanks for the advices !
