Today I bought a BR 550 Stihl Backpack blower. I was looking and noticed that BOTH have 64.8 cc engines. They both have the same engine but the 600 produces 3.8 bhp and the 550 produces 3.4.

The 600 also produces 712 cfm vs 550 producing 530.

How does the 600 gain the extra bhp and the CFM?

Just looked in the service manual for the 500 - 550 - 600 and the engine is the same for all 3. The only difference I can see is that the operating speeds are different. RPM's are listed as 6100 for the 550 and 7200 for the 600. Don't have the parts manuals so I'm not sure if anything else is different besides the tuning.

I am not up to date on Stihl's Blowers, but their chainsaw line I am familiar with and they have a consumer line and a pro line. The pro has upgraded internals such as better pistons, rods and chrome lined cylinders which could explain the HP difference.

Cool Deal. Never thought about that. Maybe I should look on ebay and see if there is a difference in rebuild kits.
