I want to start another pedal tractor project soon and need some advise. I am going to use a david Bradley hood on a tricycle style framework, want it to look like an old john deer when done.  I have most of the tractor figured out and have most of what I need here, what I am having trouble with is the steering gear box for the front.  I want to put a right angle steering box on the outside of the hood so you see the steering shaft on top of the hood like the one in the pic.

I cannot seem to find a right angle gear box to suit, needs to be small and light duty, and not cost $250.  Any suggestions???

What about the gear box on a old Sears mower deck. I have a Sears Custom 10E, the deck has two gear boxes, one for each blade.

Most pedal tractors only turn the steering wheel less than half a turn, lock to lock.  So do you want gear to gear, or slow it down with a worm to gear system?

How about something like this? 1/2 inch drive should be strong enough?

Thanks Bmerf I had the same idea but on my mobile can't copy & drag links. I have one of those. I think it would be heavy duty enough but small enough as well. You could probably weld a 1/2" socket swivel to get the right angle on the steering rod.
