I just got my first house there for first riding mower its a bolens with the 14.5 hp. The pulley on the shaft coming from the motor moves up and down freely the only thing that is stopping it is this "U" shaped bar the pulley also just sits on it my question is what is wrong here is the bolt missing r is something broken?

Can we get a better idea of what type of Bolens you have?

Welcome to GT Talk, it sounds like the key is sheared or the set screw holding the pulley onto the shaft is loose and the pulley slid off.

The u shaped bar is a belt stop/guild and helps hole the belt around the drive pulley.

Look on the hub of the pulley, there should be a allen head set screw that is what hold the pulley tight against the shaft, look on the engine PTO shaft, there should be a small key sticking out of the shaft or if it is missing a half moon slot cut into the shaft for a key to sit in.

If the key is sheared off it will need to be removed from the shaft for a new replacment.

If the key is missing then we would need your model number of the tractor to find the part number for a replacement key.

They Bolens experts should be along in a few and will be able to help you further.

Sounds like it's either missing the retainer bolt or it's extremely loose.

There should be a bolt that goes up into the crank from the bottom. It will either be a 5/8" or 9/16" fine thread bolt.
