I think if we're honest, in most cases the super garden tractors, with large frames, super hd hydrostatics with foot pedal control and 14 h.p. or more and 24"-26" or larger rear tires. MF, JD, Cub Cadet, Sears, Economy, Speedex, and others have made such tractors and if you plan to run large add on's such as loaders, boom poles, etc... the bigger tractors just do it better.

"Best" is in the eye of the beholder.  Bigger isn't necessarily best or better, nor is most HP, or heaviest, or what type transmission, every machine has a purpose and if it aligns with your purpose its likely "best" in your situation.  There is no one best machine for everyone.

The tractor that had, in my opinion, the greatest influence in the industry is the simplicity 700.  It was the first garden tractor to have power take off points in front, center, and rear. It was a mini farm tractor in shape and sold very well.  Every manufacturer, including farm equipment, suddenly entered the market.

The tractor that followed, the John Deere 110 moved the bar out even further to produce a true mini farm tractor with great utility

What kind of PTO did these tractors have? I see from pictures on the web that they are belt driven?

I'm pretty sure Bolens was the first to feature a live PTO for center, front and rear mount shaft driven attachments in 1962.
