It reminds me of this thing, a bug converted into a tank: http://www.ridelust.com/rocket-bug/

 

A VW repair shop in Fishersville, VA made one.  I don't think it is the one featured in the website, but it sure looks like it.  My memory of that particular "tank" was when the owner took it to the local tea party rally.  It was the subject of interest for certain.
