in a Boeing/Stearman N2S-3 today :dancingbanana:  :dancingbanana:  :dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:

It was AWESOME!!

The N2S-3 is was the Navy version of the AAF's PT-17,  and was used throughout WWII.

Flying that rascal checked off 2 items on my bucket list.  Fly a radial engine airplane, and fly a Warbird.

I was surprised at just how easy it was to handle in the air.  Very docile airplane and pretty light on the controls.

Ground handling is a bit touchy, as it is with all tail draggers, but since I learned to fly in a J-3 Cub, that was something that didn't surprise me.

I have video, and of course, I'll be posting it on YouTube.  I'm not sure when that will happen though, as it's 40 min. long and the file is 1.2 GB in size. Where I am now does not have WiFi, and I'm using the Virgin Mobile hotspot which has a somewhat limited data limit, so I'll have to wait until we stay in a campground with WiFi before I upload it.

I didn't know you flew planes.  That's something I've always wanted to do, and that old N2S-3 looks like a whole heck of a lot of fun.  How does it feel to fly in an open plane?

I'm hope you do more than circle around the nearest dead creature, right?

Congratulations. My uncle was a WWII Navy pilot. He brought home, after the war, a trainer that he had used at Pensecola. It was a sleek little job still in Navy colors in the 60s the last time I saw it. He died in it in 78 when he had a heartattack. Died doing what he loved.

What is next on the list? Good Luck, Rick

Didn't know the flying thing for you either. Guess that is where "Buzzard" comes in?   Circling Dead things.....just got that! Ha!

On my MM forum there was fella that used to do those power Line inspections around Ohio area. He sure could get in close and take lots of pix. He always found MM collections and tractors in fields, dead or alive and posted some pretty close up pix there. He was in plane too, not a copter.  He no longer does that job, "downsizing", but still flies his own.  That's what YOU need to do. Find those hidden gems in the woods and fields and post here!  Maybe not, probly too small to see GT's!

Did a bit more than circling like a Buzzard :D :D :D

I reserve that for when I'm flying sailplanes.

Ben, I'm >.< close to getting my PPG (Private Pilot Glider) license.  All I need to do now is take the check ride.

I posted these sometime back; when I soloed in the Blanik L-23.

On this you should skip to about 2:05, as the L-23 isn't really visible until then.

Note how 'graceful' I was when getting out :rolling:

That is awesome OB!  There is not other sound like a Radial makes.  I used to love to listen to a big radial start up, the starter wining trying to turn that big boy over and then the engine catches and comes to life.

Just before the Navy retired the C-1's I got to be the maintenance chief for the COD (Carrier on-board delivery) crew.  The C1 had twin 1820 radial engines and after working on Jet's my whole career it sure was a big change to have to deal with the recip's.  I used to go on flights with the crew and actually got some stick time.

Neat video. But, :poke:  wearing short sleeves in February? Really makes me jealous.
